Cool Japan

When Japan's economic growth began to deflate, the Occident no longer saw Japan as a threat therefore began commodifying off of Japan as a weaker country through Hello Kitty, Anime, and Manga. During this time, cyberpunk continued to thrive off of techno-orientalist tropes. Popular examples of cyberpunk that arose during this time are Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix, two defining films of the cyberpunk genre.
