Techno-orientalism now continues to thrive in the cyberpunk genre. By continuously fearing the success of East Asian economic growth, it continues to feed into the entertainment we make and consume.

 

Typical cyberpunk media now consists of east Asian fetishization and exotifying East Asian urban life, with most cities mimicking Tokyo, Seoul, or Hong Kong. Although most cyberpunk media consist of East Asian cultural references, most creators are white.

 

The exotification of East Asian culture in the cyberpunk genre affects how East Asians are viewed. A huge surge of East Asian hate crimes arose during the pandemic and the fetishization of East Asians could be partly to blame.
